A lot has happened in my genealogy world in the last year or two. And rather than come up with some New Year's resolutions, I decided to create my Genealogy Bucket List - things that I would like to do or accomplish in the coming year (or as soon as I'm able to do so).
Research Trips
Danish Immigrant Museum - I'd like to schedule a long weekend to research my Petersen and Jeremiasen (and related) families who settled in Waterloo, Iowa in 1888. The museum is located in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Omaha Public Library - I think that several Saturdays looking through microfilm and other genealogy resources at the W. Dale Clark Library might be a good way to spend some cold winter days. I'm making a list of the records to look up based on some on-line indexes.
I also need to spend several days reviewing microfilmed newspapers at the Nebraska State Historical Society here in Lincoln.
Spend a day researching at the Nebraska State Genealogical Society library, which is housed at the Beatrice Public Library in Beatrice, Nebraska.
Spend a day getting acquainted with the library of my local Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society library, housed at the Union College Library here in Lincoln.
Visit several of the Family History Centers in Nebraska.
Cemetery trips
I'd like to continue documenting graves of relatives and family friends at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery (Greenwood, Nebraska), Rosehill Cemetery (Waverly, Nebraska), Calvary Cemetery (Lincoln, Nebraska), Wyuka Cemetery (Lincoln, Nebraska), and make my first outing to Saint Patrick Cemetery (Davey, Nebraska).
Classes, conferences and workshops
April 9, 2011 will be the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society spring conference. I plan to be there!
On May 6 and 7, 2011 I'll be attending the Nebraska State Genealogical Society conference in Nebraska City. I'll also be attending any conferences sponsored by the Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society. My local society has some great programs lined up for the monthly meetings in 2011.
July 15 and 16, 2011 will be the Genealogy and Land Records Symposium in Beatrice, Nebraska.
Family History Expos will make a return visit to the Kansas City area with its Expo scheduled in Overland Park, Kansas on July 29 - 30, 2011. There's a lot of my blogger buddies who need to get together for a reunion!
I plan to take local historian Jim McKee's community college class on the suburbs of Lincoln, Nebraska in a few weeks, and also pick up the two sessions I missed on his History of Lincoln class last fall.
Organization
Is this ever really done? I want to continue to make progress with my scanning, filing and organizing of both paper and digital records.
Public Speaking
Will 2011 be the year I begin doing some genealogy speaking at local meetings and conferences? I've got about four one-hour sessions outlined that I would like to present. But - I still need to finalize the PowerPoint presentations and prepare some handouts. We'll see how this goal evolves in the coming months.
If this bucket list is any indication, it's going to be a very busy year for me!
