The Homestead Act of 1862 was a significant piece of legislation that contributed to the settlement of the American west. It was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862. The Act provided settlers with 160 acres of public land in exchange for a filing fee. Settlers were required to live on and improve the land for five years. With the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act in 2012, this page will provide links to online resources regarding the Homestead Act, resources for homestead records, updates about the homestead records digitization project and other activities to commemorate this legislation.
